Michael Gault is a professional award winning artist, who has resided in Colorado for almost 30 years. He has a BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute and an MA from the University of Missouri, Kansas City. He has taught college courses as well as classes and workshops on painting, drawing, printmaking, plein air, design, computer graphics, art appreciation and art history.
His primary art process of choice is oil painting. His traditional training came with a passion for all things landscape, although still-life & portraits have been a prominent part of his journey. In recent years Gault has developed his non-representational skills with a pursuit & focus of utilization of light, color and space.
Michael's gallery exhibitions began early in his career and has continued and grown with representation in Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, California, Arizona, Illinois, New Mexico, Florida, & Wyoming. He participates in plein air shows and competitions, and has won numerous awards throughout the years. He has collectors throughout the United States as well as internationally.
Michael is a member of Oil Painters of America, Outdoor Painters Society, Plein Air Artists Colorado, Pikes Peak Plein Air Painters, the Mountain Artists and is an active mentor in the Woodland Park Art Community.
I am a traditionally trained artist with a passion for the creation of art. For me it's all about the process of making art. Landscapes and Plein Air have been my passion, but I also am empowered by creating unique and inspiring pieces. My love for art began at a very young age and has grown into a lifelong pursuit. I am not a business-focused artist, I am a process-focused artist. My reality is that the product is what is left over when I'm done with the process of a painting or making a piece of art. The product does pay the bills, but I live to create, so it's all about process for me. I'm at a point in my life and career where I'm committed to utilizing my Master-Art skills & experience to paying it forward. I find joy in mentoring other artists who are new or late coming to their creative life. I enjoy sharing the skills and processes and knowledge I've accumulated over my career. I also enjoy empowering individuals who think they know nothing about art to take back their power and realize that viewing and enjoying is half of the creative process.
As an artist, Michael is committed to expressing his interest and enjoyment for all things art. His classical training required hands on experience with everything from photography to sculpture, and while his primary interest is painting, he confidently utilizes various mediums and styles in his creative efforts. This training and concept and the conviction that a true artist can affectively make any kind of art can be frustrating for a gallery who wants to box in a style for each artist, but Gault’s abilities as a master artist have made this impossible and as a result his galleries carry a variety of styles when they represent him.
For Michael, creative problem solving and self‐discovery is always evolutionary and compelling and has led to unexpected advancements in his proficiencies. His creative endeavors are life‐affirming expressions of the human experience for him. He has been on his artistic journey for many years now, and he continues to be as excited and passionate about art today as he was at the beginning of his journey and remains committed to advancing his innovational skillsets.
Gault refers to himself as a process artist, and as such, focuses on the process of making the best art he can, no matter the medium or style. He loves the creative process, whether it is painting representational landscapes, doing plein‐air works, pursuing abstract paintings or creating free‐association non‐representational paintings, it is always all about the process. For him this ultimately means that he isn’t motivated by the concept of product, he just believes is that a product ultimately occurs when the process is completed.
Oil painting is Michael’s preferred process. He finds it physically fulfilling, enjoying the way the paint feels when it is being applied and the gestural quality painting allows. He strongly believes creativity should be shared not only through commercial patronage, but also with the sharing of the creative experience and the process of art making which is vital to share ideas and to discussing problems. He’s learned that whether he is the student or the teacher that the sharing is imperative. And he believes that the creative experience isn’t fulfilled until a spectator views the art and is able to interact with it, completing the art’s purpose.
